Developing the caring environment

Where we live is vital to our security and to our wellbeing; this is true of every citizen, but particularly true of people who have to move into care environments, which should support them to live full lives, at times when they have illness or frailty, says Professor Martin Green, chief executive, Care England

There are so are many aspects to developing the physical environment within which good quality care can be delivered, and in which people can thrive. If we get the physical environment right, it is not only really good for the people who live in care settings, it also supports staff to be able to maximise their independence.

Over the past 20 years there has been a lot of work done by distinguished academics that have gone into great detail about what makes a good and therapeutic environment. This work has been rooted in practice and comes out of the experience of people who have lived in health and social care environments and those who have worked for many years at the front line.
