Scottish celebrations trigger memories

A week celebrating all things Scottish, and including Burns Night, at Mill House care home in Chipping Campden, has been enjoyed by residents, relatives and the care team.

Residents at the care home – some of whom have Scottish connections – jumped at the chance for a week with a theme and enjoyed creating tartan decorations, sampling shortbread and even visiting Edinburgh Castle with the help of YouTube. These activities helped to bring back memories for many and triggered lots of interesting conversations at the home.

Paul Dixon, one of the Mill House activity co-ordinators, says: “We acknowledge and appreciate the importance of Burns Night and used the day to create and implement a whole range of activities to stimulate memories and conversation.”

Activites included: making tartan and Scottish themed decorations; coffee morning with Scottish shortbread; a virtual tour of Edinburgh Castle with the help of YouTube; a Burns lunch, including a bagpiper, haggis, smoked salmon and of course a tot of Whisky!

Home Manager Kim Mulford comments: “Spreading the event over several days and building up to the bagpiper coming in has been a tremendous success, encouraging and engaging our elderly residents and those living with dementia is at the very heart of what we aim to do.”
