Fun and games at sports event

Staff and residents from 4 North West care homes came together to compete in a fun traditional sports day event.

The Stocks Hall Nursing & Care Group county-wide sports day was held at Bishop Rawsthorne High School in Croston, Lancashire and was organised by the care group to help keep the residents active, build new friendships and provide a lively activity that family members of all ages could enjoy.

Residents and team members from Stocks Hall Care Homes in Ormskirk, St Helens, Mawdesley and Burscough took part in a host of events including balloon volleyball, egg and spoon race and hula hoop challenge.

Each home brought two games for all to participate in and the mix of physical activities ensured that nobody was left out – even the youngest of family members came to support their loved ones.

Betty McLoughlin , activities co-ordinator at Stocks Hall Ormskirk Home says: “Our residents thoroughly enjoyed the sports day event with many of them fondly chatting with new friends they met on the day about many wonderful memories of Sports Days, their own and those of their children growing up.”

Plenty of cheer came from the sidelines as spectators watched the teams compete the challenges on offer. A range of scrumptious sweet treats were then served including homemade cakes, biscuits and refreshments.

Manager of Stocks Hall Mawdesley, Faye Cooper, says: "The sports day was a huge success.  The family atmosphere shone through as residents, staff  and family members supported and encouraged each other, working together as the team they are.

"Meaningful activities such as this can help residents to improve physical fitness, improve mood and help to combat depression. It is also very important to staff, helping to improve staff morale and promote greater engagement with families. It highlighted just how much the warm and friendly team spirit flows through Stocks as a care group."

Cooper adds: “I would like to say a huge thank you to all of the Stocks Hall homes for taking part, and to Bishop Rawsthorne High School for letting us host the event at their sports hall – we’re already looking forward planning another group event soon.”
