Sunrise adviser joins NASHICS board

Sunrise Senior Living UK and Gracewell Healthcare’s health and safety advisor has secured a seat on the National Association for Safety and Health in Care Service (NASHICS) board.

Rebecca Brooks is now one of eight health and safety professionals on the panel, which is made up of a range of care providers voted onto the national committee.

The NASHICS exist to promote excellence of safety and health in care services and offer guidance, advice and support to care providers across the country. The board has a vital role in improving safety and health within care services and provides a space for individuals and organisations involved in any aspect of safety and health to exchange and share information, experience and expertise.

As part of her role on the panel, Brooks must attend at least four of the group’s forums and assist in sharing best practice. She will also be asked to present sessions at forums.

In her role as health and safety advisor at Sunrise and Gracewell, Rebecca audits all the sites to monitor health and safety compliance throughout the UK. She is also responsible for delivering nationally recognised training to all general managers, deputy managers and heads of departments at Sunrise communities and Gracewell homes.

Joanne Balmer, Sunrise and Gracewell’s senior director of care and quality, encouraged Rebecca to put herself forward for the role, which will last for two years. This role will allow both Sunrise and Gracewell to work with other leading providers and offers a networking platform.

Brooks has previously worked for major hospitality companies as a training and compliance manager. She was also the compliance manager for Ashbourne Homes, has lectured at Leicester College in health, safety and environmental management and has worked with the health and safety enforcement team at Leicester City Council.

Joanne Balmer, senior director of care and quality at Sunrise and Gracewell, says: “Congratulations to Rebecca for her success in being selected. It is a wonderful achievement and testament to the hard work and dedication of her and the rest of the team at Sunrise and Gracewell. I am sure Rebecca will do an exceptional job of sharing best practice and initiatives that we are progressing with as an organisation.

“This is also a great opportunity for us to learn more from the other organisations. Health and safety are vital when looking after older people and we proud of the work that we do in this area. We look forward to working with individuals across the sector via this committee.”
