Health and safety award for provider

Barchester Healthcare is celebrating after receiving a prestigious healthcare services industry sector award from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).

Entrants demonstrated a consistently excellent and continuously improving performance to become a finalist in the category. Each finalist then provided evidence of a particular initiative or innovative approach that would justify their selection as 'best in sector'.

This year, Barchester presented its A-Z of Health and Safety guide, a quick reference guide to enable staff and managers within care homes and hospitals to find answers to many safety related questions. Barchester’s health and safety team also evidenced workshops and engagement with its health and safety champions. The business proudly took home the highly coveted ‘Healthcare Services Award’.

The RoSPA Awards scheme, which receives entries from organisations around the world, recognises achievements in health and safety management systems, including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement.

Julia Small, RoSPA’s head of qualifications, awards and events, says: “The RoSPA Awards are the most highly respected in the health and safety arena, with almost 2000 entrants every year. The awards allow organisations to prove excellence in the workplace, demonstrating a commitment to the wellbeing of not only employees but all those who interact with it.”

Paul Mason, director of health and safety at Barchester, says: “We are delighted to have received such a prestigious award in recognition for maintaining the highest level of health and safety management throughout Barchester homes and hospitals. Winning is testimony to the commitment shown by all staff employed by the group and the importance and focus placed on health and safety by Barchester’s executive management team.”

Dr Pete Calveley, CEO at Barchester Healthcare, said: “The safety of our residents, patients and staff is always our first consideration and so we are especially proud that our work in this area is recognised by RoSPA.

"This outcome could not have been achieved without the support of our brilliant managers and staff, including our health and safety champions, and without the guidance of Paul Mason and his dedicated team Lisa Harris, Andy Hollingshead and Fiona Torrie. We’re very proud to be the safest care home provider in the sector.”

The award were presented during a ceremony at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole hotel on Thursday 6 June 2019.
