For the past four years, there has been a net reduction in the number of care home beds, with a loss of more than 8000 beds during that period (resulting in the displacement of 8000 vulnerable residents), while the number of people aged 75 and over has increased by more than 350,000..1
In 2018, there were two care home closures for every care home opening, resulting in a net loss of more than 3000 beds. Thankfully, the average size of each home that opened was about 50 per cent larger than those that closed, so the net loss of beds was less significant than it might have been.
There are about 395,000 care home beds for older people in England, so overall losses have been relatively small, but a shrinking level of supply alongside growing demand cannot continue if we are to put the resident at the centre of care and be able to offer anyone who needs it a choice of care locally.
