Students' artwork brings joy

Residents and staff at MHA Amathea care home in Workington have been enjoying views of local landmarks after being presented with multiple pieces of artwork painted by the students from a nearby college.

MHA Amathea received paintings of well known sites from around both Whitehaven and Workington, which were produced by Level 2 art students at Lakes College. They are now proudly hanging in the specialist dementia unit at the home and include views of the Candlestick at Whitehaven harbour, Vulcan Park in Workington and Workington Castle.

Shauna Jones, an art tutor at Lakes College, says: “The students wanted to work on a project that would enrich the lives of older people in our local community. We thought this would be a great opportunity to bring two different generations together through a creative medium.”

Louise Harvey, deputy manager at MHA Amathea, says: “We are thoroughly enjoying looking at the paintings every day – they are both relaxing and stimulating for our residents, bringing joy and colour into the home. Feedback from relatives and staff has been fantastic too.”

Tony Lyons, home manager, adds: “We’re so grateful to Shauna, her students and the college for these fantastic pieces which we’re proud to hang on our walls. This is a project which has truly crossed generations and the end results are something for all to enjoy.”
