The number of deaths involving Covid-19 in care homes in England and Wales has risen 14% to 11,644, according to the latest weekly data published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
In England, the number of deaths involving Covid-19 in care homes that were registered by 15 May was 11,096, a rise of 1,661 on the previous week.
In Wales the tally stands at 548 – up 69 from the week ending 8 May.
The latest combined death toll in care homes in England and Wales of 11,644 compares to the previous weekly figure of 9,975 up to 8 May, a rise of 14.3%.
In total, 41,220 deaths involving Covid-19 were registered in England and Wales between 28 December 2019 and 15 May 2020 in all settings, up 3,845 from the previous weekly tally of 37,375.
Data complied by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) meanwhile showed 870 deaths involving Covid-19 in care homes in England in the week up to 22 May.
The CQC has recorded a total of 10,636 deaths in care homes in England.
Whereas the ONS reports deaths where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate, the CQC notifications rely on the statement of the care home provider that the virus was suspected or confirmed.
Care Inspectorate Wales meanwhile recorded 427 deaths involving Covid-19 in care homes between 17 March and 22 May, of which 35 occurred in the week up to 22 May.
