MHA: Creating Community Through Technology

Care charity Methodist Homes (MHA) is transforming resident experiences across its 73 care homes by using technology to build vibrant, connected communities. Through the use of large, interactive tablets, the organisation is enabling residents to reconnect with cherished memories, engage with loved ones, and participate in shared activities, fostering a stronger sense of belonging.

The initiative has been significantly boosted by a donation of one of these interactive tables from software provider OneAdvanced. These devices, which function like oversized iPads on wheels, are versatile enough to be used by residents whether they are sitting, standing, or being supported in bed. And their large screens make them accessible for those with visual impairments and encourage group participation.

Emma Lindblom, Head of Quality Improvement at MHA, explained the profound impact of this technology. “There’s something about the format of having it in a large tablet that’s quite accessible, but also allows a community feel to it,” she said. “Marrying the tech and the human just gives you possibilities that we never would have had 10-15 years ago.”

These tablets have become a lifeline. They’ve connected residents with family members living in other countries by live-streaming weddings and christenings into the care homes. And by doing so, has meant residents can feel part of the celebration, sharing in the joy of the occasion. The technology also allows for group entertainment, from singalongs with the Last Night of the Proms to virtual concerts from residents' favourite artists.

The individual stories highlight the technology's true power. Jack, a resident in a Blackpool care home, had always loved ballroom dancing at the iconic Tower Ballroom. Using the tablet, staff were able to take him on a virtual trip back to a dance in the very ballroom he recognised. “He started singing,” Emma shared. “He was really happy and then got all carers and other residents to join in. Taking him back to his memories but also involving that much wider group was just lovely to hear about.”

In another home, technology bridged a language barrier for a resident whose primary language is Italian, inspired by the incredible achievement of an MHA team member who learned the language themselves so she could support truly person-centered care. Using translation apps on the tablet, other care colleagues can now have conversations with her, breaking down feelings of isolation and ensuring she feels understood and connected. “We can go on Google Translate and people can talk Italian to them, and it can translate it back to English,” Emma explained. “We can do that kind of connection  because we’ve got the technology in the room. It just makes all the difference.”

From playing digital games and completing jigsaws to taking virtual walks down seaside promenades from the 1960s, the tablets unlock new possibilities for engagement and reminiscence therapy. These experiences often spark conversations and memories that residents hadn't shared before.

The donation from OneAdvanced has helped MHA move closer to its goal of having one of these invaluable devices in every care home. “We’re massively grateful,” said Emma. “As we are a charity which raises fund for life enhancing services in our homes, the donation of a tablet means a lot to us. It means that any funds we were raising to buy one, will not be able to be spend on something else to enrich the lives of those who live at the home.”

MHA’s innovative approach shows how technology, when thoughtfully applied, can enhance the human experience, strengthen community bonds, and empower older people to live later life well. Alongside their 73 care homes, they also support older people in 59 retirement living schemes and 39 Community Hubs.
