Baroness Glenys Thornton appointed as chair elect at the Social Care Institute of Excellence and will step into the full role when Paul Burstow steps down in June.
Labour peer and former minister Baroness Glenys Thornton will take over from as chair of the Social Care Institute of Excellence when current in cumbent Paul Burstow steps down in June, it was announced today.
A life peer appointed to the House of Lords by former prime minister Tony Blair, Baroness Thornton has held several senior ministerial roles, including as a parliamentary under-secretary of health, and has led organisations including the Young Foundation and the Fabian Society.
She will work alongside the current Chair, Rt. Hon. Paul Burstow, during a planned handover period ahead of the end of his term in June, the SCIE said in a statement today.
The move comes after Gerard Crofton Martin took over as interim chief executive this month following the departure of Kathryn Marsden OBE as chief executive at the end of last month.
Baroness Thornton said the SCIE “plays a vital role in collaborating and innovating across social care” and she is looking forward to working with colleagues across the organisation to “build on our strong foundations and support the next phase of our impact”.
