Setting the standard for exceptional dementia care

Sam Dondi-Smith, senior partner at the National Dementia Care Accreditation Scheme, explains how NaDCAS is setting the benchmark for excellence in dementia care, and why this accreditation is not only beneficial for care homes but also essential for families and caregivers making the important decision of where to place their loved ones

Dementia care is a critical and ever-growing area, with the need for high-quality, compassionate care more essential than ever. It is no longer enough for care homes to provide a basic level of service — they must go above and beyond to offer a person-centred, compassionate approach that caters to the unique needs of each individual. The National Dementia Care Accreditation Scheme (NaDCAS) is at the forefront of ensuring that care homes meet these elevated standards.

As the population ages, we know that dementia is a growing concern, with nearly one million people in the UK living with dementia, a figure expected to rise to 1.6 million by 2040. These numbers highlight the urgency of improving the quality of care available to individuals living with dementia. Care homes play a critical role in providing the necessary support to people who are no longer able to live independently due to the progression of dementia.

However, families and loved ones are increasingly discerning when choosing care for their relatives. While basic regulatory compliance is important, it is no longer enough to reassure families that their loved ones will receive the best care possible. Families want a guarantee that the care provided goes beyond the bare minimum and truly caters to the individual needs of their loved ones. They seek care homes that not only meet regulatory standards but exceed them. This is where NaDCAS accreditation becomes a vital part of the decision-making process.
