Hello from the new editor

Mary-Louise Clews puts out a call for fresh, innovative pitches that reflect the opportunities and challenges facing the sector as she takes over the editor's chair.

The team behind The Care Home Environment are rightly proud of a deeply embedded yet fiercely editorially independent magazine designed to celebrate and share the inspirational work that defines our modern care home sector – and I couldn’t be more honoured to be joining them as editor as we face the challenges and opportunities of 2026 and beyond.

I join at a time when the sector is under pressure to expand to meet the needs of an ageing population with increasingly complex requirements, while simultaneously struggling to recruit and retain its workforce, manage rising costs, and navigate ongoing land‑availability restrictions.

Conversely, it’s important to acknowledge that investment in the sector remains strong and continues to grow. At TCHE, we strive to reflect the impact of that investment – showcasing the creativity across all areas of the care home environment.

Because innovative and carefully designed homes that raise the bar on expected standards for therapeutic environments improve the lives of everyone involved in the sector. And that is what we all strive to achieve.

Could you be a contributor?

I’m eager to hear from readers who are exploring fresh, thoughtful, or unexpected approaches to improving the care home environment, and who are willing to share what they’ve learned.  If you’re interested in contributing to TCHE, I’d love you to send a short synopsis – including a few bullet points and a brief overview – outlining the focus of your proposed article and the insight you hope to offer. As an editorially led publication, we welcome contributions that enlighten, provoke thought, and elevate best practice without promoting specific products or services. We do, however, include a short author biography and professional details so contributors can be recognised for their expertise and the valuable work they do.

I look forward to hearing from you.
