Care home design priorities have evolved towards a greater focus on achieving better wellbeing outcomes alongside regulatory compliance. Clare Cameron explains how this shift was realised in a recent new development for Barchester in Stourbridge.
The key considerations when designing care settings have rightly shifted in recent years. Rather than prioritising compliance and capacity there is a greater focus on how people live, feel, and connect in our buildings. There is an appreciation that design can actively support dignity, independence and enhance the quality of life for residents, while also working operationally for staff and investors.
Harris Irwin Architects have delivered over 60 care homes in the past 13 years, working predominantly in the later-living and care sectors. One of our long-standing partners is Barchester Healthcare, with whom we've delivered at least 28 projects.
Using their 'Iverley View' scheme, in Stourbridge, as a case study can illustrate practical design approaches that operators and suppliers can adopt, or benchmark against, when developing or refurbishing care homes.
